House of Science


House of Science on the AlbaNova University campus is part of Stockholm University and Royal Institute of Technology. In 2004 more than 800 school classes or groups of students made experiments in the laboratories.

The laboratory is a resource for the teachers, their classes and individual students and an important complement to the traditional education system. It is open for schools from all over Sweden.

The classes come to House of Science to do interesting, modern experiments in a scientific environment. The experiments in the laboratory cover a variety of subjects like modern physics experiments, analyses of DNA, astronomy and projects often using modern information technology.

 

Examples of modern physics experiments are:


Determination of speed of light
Study of radioactive decays
Measurements of the electron
The wave/particle duality
Superconductivity

Physics projects using information technology:

Data taking and analysis of experiments
Hands on CERN - particle collisions on Internet
Hands on Universe - an astronomy project using Internet

For the younger students the emphasis is on projects that stimulate their fantasy and interest in natural science.

Some popular projects are:

Optics and the eye
Energy from the sun and the wind

They are also introduced to more advanced subjects like astronomy and cosmic rays and the interior of matter, which fascinate them. Up to now more than 15000 teachers and students have visited the laboratory and the demand for more projects and visits exceeds our present capacity.
