European Physical Society Award 2001

In 2001 the European Physical Society (high energy physics section) instituted a new prize for outreach activities. This demonstrates a breakthrough and recognition of scientific outreach activity on the international level. Outreach Prize Award 2001 The prize was awarded the 16 July at the Conference on High Energy Physics in Budapest, Hungary to:

Dr. Christine Sutton (Oxford University) and

Prof. Erik Johansson (Stockholm University)

For their innovative use of electronic and printed media to bring HEP to wider public, including professional colleagues, students and schools, and in particular their collaboration developing computer interactive packages for educational master classes.

Dr. Christine Sutton and Prof. Erik Johansson

My talk at the conference was entitled “Quarks, Leptons and Galaxies for Students” and described how the two standard models - The Big Bang model and the Standard Model - could be presented to interested students using the Hands on CERN education project and our 2.3 m radio telescope.
