I am working in the field of experimental astroparticle physics with the telescopes for cosmic neutrinos, earlier with AMANDA and nowdays with IceCube, at the South Pole in Antarctica (see even the homepage of Icecube). We are using the neutrino particles to learn more about the Universe. Among the unsolved questions we are trying to solve are what the dark matter in the universe consists of and the sources of the ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. A layout of the AMANDA detector can be found in AMANDA-II picture. AMANDA was closed down in May 2008 after nine years of succsesful running.
The IceCube telescope consists of 86 strings with 60 optical module each. On top of the ice an air shower detector for cosmic rays, IceTop, is installed. The optical modules are deployed between 1450 m and 2450 m depth. The last detector string was deployed in December the 18th 2010 and the full detector started to take data in May 2011.
In the centre of the detector six extra strings have been added to get in total 13 strings with a spacing of 72 m instead of the standard 125 m. This part is called DeepCore and will detect neutrinos of lower energies which is important when searching for neutrinos from dark matter annihilations in the Earth and the Sun, neutrino oscillations etc.
